The Story

My friend Laura Wagner frequently approaches me with business ideas. When she came to me about OTC, I knew she was onto something and agreed to help start the company.

In 2000, it was not common practice for QSRs (quick serve restaurants) to accept plastic because the cost of taking credit cards eroded their thin profit margins. Laura’s concept allowed QSRs to accept debit cards and charge a small convenience fee, offsetting costs entirely and even generating additional profit.

The original business plan called for giving up a significant share of equity to investors. I reworked the model and created a funding plan that completely eliminated the need for equity investment. The new plan worked. The company launched successfully, generating $20 million in revenue over the next six years.
